Free Write #1: Next Endeavor

I have been giving this some thought for awhile now. I think I know what I want my next endeavor to be. I have always been the soul to help others and contribute my support wherever it is most needed. I cannot think of a better way to leave a legacy before farewelling from my undergraduate experience than the initiative I am about to present. I want to take the time to spread love, kindness and support to homeless individuals. However, I do not want to just help them on a short-term level (e.g. buying them a meal). This only gets them by for that moment. They will still remain on the streets and soon be hungry again.

I want to create a sense of hope for them and offer resources that can potentially assist them to be able to leave the streets. In this, I have the idea to purchase backpacks or some sort of bag they can carry. In the bag, I am thinking of packing such things as foods, water, first aid kits, socks, blankets, a hand book of some sort with resources and so on. One can call it a care package or the bag of love to something better. I really want to pursue this but the initiative will require a lot of support.

If anyone of you are interested in being apart of this initiative, please let me know. I would absolutely love for you to be on board with me. Together, we can change lives and make our community brighter!

  1. I think this is a great idea and an important impact that can be made on the community. I do know that the Girl Scout Organization often likes to be involved in different projects like that so you might want to reach out to them as well as change makers which is the ASU organization that helps students with community service ideas. With the winter season coming up as well as the holiday I wish you the best of luck in providing a great service to those in need.

  2. H2. Hey Denise, I like the idea of providing them with a backpacking style backpack to help them keep their necessities nearby, but I have another suggestion to add to it. Have you considered including hiking gear in this kit and paying them to maintain trailheads and camp grounds? This could give them stable employment, experience and an income without much of the potential negative things that come along with helping them find an outside job to get them off the streets or even a little help for those who aren’t quite ready to make such big steps yet. You could also provide resume help and interview clothing for when they are ready to seek a job elsewhere (in the park system maybe?). Great idea with a lot of potential!
